Directions from US 101 North (Van Ness Avenue) Public Transportation / Bicycle

Directions From Downtown San Francisco:
Take any westbound street to Van Ness Avenue and turn right, heading north on Van Ness Avenue / US 101 North. Then follow the directions below “From US 101 North (Van Ness Ave.).”

Directions from the East Bay:
Take the Bay Bridge (I-80 West) to San Francisco and take the Golden Gate Bridge exit. Follow the signs for US 101 North, which is also Van Ness Avenue. Once you are on Van Ness, follow the directions below “From US 101 North (Van Ness Ave.).”

Directions from US 101 North (Van Ness Avenue):
When 101 North (Van Ness Ave.) reaches Lombard Street, it turns left and continues west onto Lombard toward the Golden Gate Bridge. After crossing Divisadero and then Broderick Streets, move into the far-left lane, which will bring you to a left-turn arrow. Follow the left-turn arrow, which means you will continue on Lombard Street instead of veering right onto Richardson. Two blocks up, after a 4-way stop, you will enter the Presidio at the Lombard Gate.

After entering the Presidio, continue straight on Lombard, past Letterman Drive and past a large office complex on your right, until you come to a 3-way stop. Turn right onto Presidio Boulevard.

Once you are on Presidio Boulevard, you will pass the Presidio Leasing Office and come to a stop sign (at Letterman Drive). Continue straight through the stop sign and look for a small parking lot on your next right that will require you to make a sharp right turn into it. You can park there and walk to Building 1016, which is to the left of the parking lot as you face the buildings. There is a large circular drive in front of Building 1016. BFA is on the first floor, a few doors down on your left after you enter.

If there is no room in the parking lot near 1016 Lincoln Boulevard, you can continue on Presidio Boulevard (which becomes Lincoln Boulevard) a little further, and you will see a large lot on your left in front of the YMCA (marked “Gym” on the map). You can park in the YMCA lot and walk back to Building 1016.

Directions from the North Bay:
Take US 101 South across the Golden Gate Bridge and proceed to the Downtown/Lombard Street exit. Stay in the far right lane. You may see a small green sign on the right for the Presidio; ignore that sign. Continue in the right lane and you will pass Lyon and Francisco Streets until you come to Chestnut Street. Take a hard right onto Chestnut Street and drive up to Lyon Street. Turn left on Lyon (watch for traffic coming in both directions) and drive up to the 4-way stop. Turn right onto Lombard Street, which takes you through the Lombard Gate into the Presidio.

After entering the Presidio, continue straight on Lombard, past Letterman Drive and past a large office complex on your right, until you come to a 3-way stop. Turn right onto Presidio Boulevard.

Take Hwy 280 North to San Francisco, where it turns into 19th Avenue. Follow 19th Avenue through Golden Gate Park, where the road turns into Presidio Boulevard. Follow Presidio Boulevard through the MacArthur Tunnel and take the Downtown/Marina exit towards San Francisco. Proceed to the Downtown/Lombard Street exit and follow the directions above from the North Bay.

Public Transportation:
The Presidio may be reached by MUNI (673-6864) bus routes 41, 45, 82X, and 30 from downtown SF/Market Street, and 28, 29, and 43 from other points in the city. The 29 and the 43 buses are the only ones that serve the Thoreau Center directly. All the other buses require a 5 to 10 minute walk from near the Lombard Street Presidio Gate.
From the North Bay, several Golden Gate Transit buses (923-2000) also stop near the Lombard Gate. See 511's Trip Planner for comprehensive transit planning.

The Presidio is open and accessible to bikes from any point in San Francisco. You can find a route map on line at http://bicycling.511.org/.

From the East Bay, you can board the Oakland/Alameda Ferry (510-522-3300) with your bike and ride from the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
